Proposed Tullaghmore

Windfarm

EMPower began development in Ireland in 2018 with the goal of providing low carbon, ecologically non-invasive, affordable energy to facilitate Ireland’s expanding economy and sustainable energy targets.

This website is intended to provide up to date design information for the proposed Tullaghmore wind farm and the proposed project is currently in the environmental impact assessment, planning application and public consultation phase.

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies and the proposed Tullaghmore Projects Planning Application Documentation are available by clicking the tab marked ''Tullaghmore Planning Submission'' below.

Please click on the below ''Community Consultation Exhibition'' tab to view further project design material compiled by the projects Design Team

Along with a project information event held in the Peacockes Hotel at Maam Cross on the 31/03/2022 three separate project information design webinar's were hosted on the 3rd of June 2021, the16th of December 2021 and the 21st July 2022.

These project events provided up to date project design information and also enabled conversation on project design elements between the project design team, local residents and any interested stakeholders.

The proposed Tullaghmore Wind Farm project will require a €39.6 million investment and will provide sustainable low carbon infrastructure to meet Ireland's growing energy demand. The proposed project benefits to the local community include significant investment in local infrastructure such as roads and electrical systems, local job creation, and an estimated contribution of €8.6 million in county council rates over the project lifetime. If consented, the Tullaghmore Wind Farm will also provide a community fund calculated in accordance with the Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS) terms and conditions at €2 per MWh of electricity produced by the project. This is to be made available to the local community for the duration of the RESS (15 years). The average capacity factor of wind energy projects in Ireland is 28.3% (SEAI, 2019). Using this efficiency figure as an example and a capacity of 36 MW, the community benefit fund would amount to an average of €184,444 per annum. The actual fund will vary around the average from year to year, depending on wind conditions. Onsite wind measurements suggest that the proposed Tullaghmore project could be capable of achieving an above average capacity factor, and therefore a larger community fund.

As well as these direct financial benefits, the proposed Tullaghmore Wind Farm will provide local employment opportunities. According to SEAI's "A Macroeconomic Analysis of Onshore Wind Deployment to 2020" 2.11 direct jobs are created per MW of installed wind capacity. Given a proposed project capacity of 37.6 MW, Tullaghmore Wind Farm could create 63 direct construction jobs, as well as 15 operations and maintenance jobs which would endure throughout the project's lifetime.

The Study Area for the proposed Tullaghmore Wind Farm project is located approximately 9km West of Oughterard and 6km East of Maam Cross in County Galway. EMPower are proposing a six turbine project, at an overall maximum height of 185 meters. This project is estimated to generate enough clean, indigenous electricity to power over 21,900 Irish homes.
